FAQ

Are all of these creatures real?

That's a big one. Actually, this wiki does not concern itself with the question of if creatures are real, if they are connected to a religious belief or just made up in a creepypasta only years ago. It just collects creatures and their names, descriptions and yes, if people claim to have witnessed them, this may be mentioned in the creature's page. The wiki leaves it up to you to determine if you want to believe in the existence of a creature, may it be a regional deity or a cryptid.

Sometimes you cite sources, sometimes you don't - why?

This wiki does not use strict academic methodology. This being said, there should be some kind of hint within the text, where a certain assertion stems from. Entries are constantly worked on and may be very incomplete the minute you access them.

Can I contribute to the wiki?

No. Plain and simple, this is a one man show, not a community project. But if you love the topic and you would like to chat, you can always drop the creator a message. See this section on sending in corrections.

I found a weird phrase or typo, are you even a person?

Yea, just a person whose native tongue isn't English, so there is no use in mocking me for a typo. Ignore it. Or screenshot it to look at it lovingly from time to time. Maybe one day when going over that page it occured on, I might find it. Or maybe it will stay forever.

Are you religious?

No. Not in the common sense of the word. I know, however, that some people might have a problem with their favorite deity or spirit being mentioned in a collection of “lowly” creatures as if it isn't special. If that's the case with you, go ask yourself if your deity or spirit would really be bothered about being mentioned really anywhere on the internet. Wouldn't that make them very human?

What's a "typhonian decade"?

Typhon is a creature from Ancient Greek mythology. Throughout the last two millenia there have been cults dedicated to Typhon. I decided to declare the 2020s the decade of Typhon for personal reasons but one might also argue that it is a time where natural desasters really picked up speed which is quite fitting for Typhon. That's all, it's his decade.

I found this entry on a creature that's clearly fictional, do you know about that?

Yes, I do. I'm including both creatures that some people view as “real” and such that have known origins in recent fiction. Looking at scriptures from hundreds or thousands of years ago we don't always have a clear picture of if people told a story for a moral or because they actually believed the mentioned creatures to be real. Writers work things into their stories that they have witnessed in person. Cryptozoologists who want to see proof of their favorite blorb existing, will find proof of existence, while their colleagues will see the creature as purely fictional. These are very blurred lines. And: This is my wiki and I will include all creatures big and small, supposed to be real in a local religious tradition and made up five years ago for a podcast. You will find all sorts of creatures on here, if you like it or not.

Can I mail you a correction?

Please don't. It's not that I don't value your interest in this little website, I simply don't have the time to include every little thing that is important to every single person. We all have our favorite creatures or a strong interest in a certain historical period. You may have a deeply personal connection to a creature mentioned on this website. Just know that being part of this collection is not the worst thing that can happen to your creature. Just wait until some esoteric influencer or coach discovers your creature and people print inaccurate depictions of it on t-shirts, telling you why you, as someone who's known about the creature ever since your childhood, are wrong. Have you ever experienced someone on an imageboard calling a deer-antlered wendigo their “spirit animal”? See? I don't do that.

There aren't really any pictures on here.

I know, right! Oh you meant that as criticism. I don't think so. Most creatures listed on here have a description. Go ahead and make your own art of what you imagine them to look like!

What's that software you're using to make this wiki?

Dokuwiki is a free and open source wiki software you can try out for yourself. I don't take any credit for anything software related on this website, I'm simply a humble user.

What stops me from downloading the wiki and printing it as a book?

Apart from the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 License it is published under, that would mainly be the curse.

The curse?

Yep. The one that befalls you and all of your family and offspring for as long as time exists if you steal other people's work. That, of course, doesn't go for citations. Citations are fine.

WHO ARE YOU??

Just call me Typhon, it's my decade after all.
